Review:
"You were the dream team last week - thank you again for bringing your personalities, hearts, and brilliance to the show! 🌟 " It was a big success and because of that I want to invite you all back for the Finale! "All of them received high praises from the exec team here... I loved how Eric, Shernita, and Melissa delivered praise and real constructive feedback. I know the teams feel motivated to improve their pieces. I would love to have the four of them return in their role if their schedules will allow - to be able to speak to the teams' growth in the next round." LOOK OUT FOR THE FINALE!!!!!!!!!

Miss Moore received the opportunity to speak to the youth in Far Rockaway in conjunction with DYCD funded program, Learn and Earn. The workshop primarily consists of High School juniors and seniors eager to learn about Miss Moore's career pathway and advice to students who want to do the same. Check out the review from the program coordinator, Kimberly Isaac. "On February 2, 2021 Miss Moore was our official guest for the Black Professionals Career Exploration workshop.
The students were very excited to speak with a professional performer, actress, educator, and creator. Many of our students wanted to know the realities of being a professional performer and Miss Moore really broke it down. She explained the importance of preparation, hard work and learning from your mistakes to become a better brand. The group had fun and enjoyed her stories about trials and triumph throughout her career. There were so many thoughtful questions and Miss Moore gave them honest advice that can be used for any career our students plan to pursue. The staff was so glad to have her enrich the space with such a bright personality and encourage our participants. Letting them know that their future is bright, and anything is possible." Thank you! Moore had the pleasure to be a guest speaker at The Artist Within: Dreaming In Color program, hosted by the Delta Rho Omega organization, that left the room of youth's inspired. Check out the review from one of the organizers Bintia Princesse Boure. "Miss Moore is all that and then a million more! I cannot even begin to express the talent, creativity, generosity and overall knowledge that Miss Moore possesses. She is a more than an expert at what she does; she is a humble servant of her art. On Saturday January 23rd, 2021 Miss Moore partnered with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Delta Rho Omega Chapter for our The Artist Within: Dreaming In Color program. This program seeks to expose middle school students of Brownsville, Brooklyn to all art forms-from the Harlem Renaissance, to Black Arts Movement and to modern day art. Miss Moore was our Master Instructor for the day and she left the students nothing but satisfied, curious and fulfilled. Our students danced, they learned about the industry and even got to have brilliant talk back sessions with Miss Moore. Their experiences were truly unmatched and for that we are thankful. Miss Moore’s dance journey is one of a kind. Her humility is evident. Her love for the art is clear. She is a true talent and it was our pleasure to partner. The Final ten teams had about three months to prepare for the final round performance at the Apollo Theater. Each team was given mentor's to help take them to the next level to perform on the Apollo Stage. Miss Melissa's Team was P.U.S.H. " PUSH is one of the most creative, passionate, and driven team's I had the pleasure with to work. Their work ethic is incredible, and they work together as a team. I give significant respects to their coaches Sam and Budda as they remained open to constructive criticism, and we stayed on the same page wanting the best results for the team. The coaches expected nothing less than perfection from not only themselves as an artist, but the dancers on the squad as well." In Congratulations, P.U.S.H. took home the winning prize and the title of Champions for the D.Y.C.D.'s 2019 Step it up N.Y.C. Competition. Surprised at their win, I can tell that P.U.S.H. will continue to grow and push the envelope as competition dancers and performers as a group. Win or Lose every competition/performance is a Learning experience. DYCD Step it Up for LGBTQ Right's This year Miss Melissa Moore had the pleasure to not only be an early judge at the Step It Up NYC competition up to the semi-finals; but also mentored one of the Final Championship Round Teams named PUSH. Amazed at their hard work ethic and outstanding performance, PUSH took home FIRST PLACE at the APOLLO THEATER. "DYCD's Step It Up NYC initiative, began in 2009 as a youth engagement program focused on fusing the passion for moving with the drive to create change. The initiative aims to leverage the performing arts to build community leadership capacity in young people ages 10-20. Through the competition, dance and step teams plan community service projects and develop citywide social campaigns to speak up about issues that impact their communities, including education, health, equality and opportunity, peace and tolerance, and safe communities." This year was no different, as DYCD challenged NYC step and dance teams to "step it up" for LGBTQ. Rights in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. What started with nearly 1,000 youth from more than 75 teams came down to the top ten. These teams took to the Apollo stage and used their performance to show that all young people—regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression— deserve to be safe, supported, and healthy. I am proud to announce the Team (PUSH), that I mentored, are now the 2019 championship team! Meet one of our teaching artists and hear about her experiences:
Dance Experience Teaching at a High School Residency. Academic life isn’t easy. Prepping for exams. Reading assigned chapters. Designing presentations. Writing essays. Meeting deadlines. Even coping with a social life. This kind of regimented schedule leads to a buildup of pressure, with no release. Mix that with a bowlful of hormones gone haywire, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. So what’s the solution? Dance! Coming from a professional dancer background, I was given the opportunity to teach at the Brooklyn Institute for Liberal Arts. Teaching at Brooklyn Institute for Liberal Arts high school has slowly shown me how important building a community through dance is created. I was able to see students developing long-lasting bonds, Improving existing relationships, learning group accountability, all while being physically active and engaged. Starting the residency in October many of my students were very shy, resistant to moving their bodies, and for some taking a dance class was very new to them. I had to not only have a strong detailed lesson plan, but I also had to take my time with the students knowing that everyone was on different levels. One common factor at the beginning of class, everyone was in their own shell and felt uncomfortable to open up to not only dancing but dancing among their peers. I had to relate to the students, and one way was by playing music that would not only get them moving but music that will also break down the barriers to reveal themselves and to get them moving. Releasing the happy endorphins. I developed fun and simple exercises, drills, and combinations with repetition and over time, dance somehow slowly broke down the barriers and I was able to see how every student was unique and at the same time all in the same boat together. As the students put their bodies in sync with the music and each other, dancing helped to stimulate powerful bonds, all while also increasing overall mental and emotional well being. I was able to notice right before my eyes a boost of self-confidence amongst the group and their peers. Smiles emerged, connections were created, and people who rarely spoke were amazing movers compared to those students who were very outspoken. Students worked together and equally to achieve a mutual, agreed-upon goal. Dance is a hidden language that brings people together. I am proud to offer a curriculum, as a part of the residency, that sparks students’ intellectual interests and fosters their physical well being at Brooklyn Institute for Liberal Arts high school.
